Welcome to my corner of this world. We may be living miles or kilometers away from each other. There may be language barriers between us or a time difference too. By the time you are reading this, you could be years or ages apart from the time I type this up. Nevertheless, we feel emotions the same way, regardless of our proximity through time and space. This is what being a brilliant human is about. Connecting.
As you know my name is Sara and I have so many stories to share. Growing up as a millennial and a minority mestiza mix in a first world country was not easy and pleasant for me. Finding my place in the world was difficult and finding genuine friends too. My parents were victims of a civil war in El Salvador, and had to flee. They made it to Texas and conceived me in one of the largest cities in the state. Sadly, though, I did not grow up with basic amenities and comforts that the average citizen enjoyed. I lived in poverty and was a victim of mental and physical abuse. It took some time to unlearn many traits and characteristics I obtained from both my parents and my environment. Even after removing these negative traits out of my being, I also had to remove my other identity and ego I had created with association with my career in the military. Veterans don’t have a smooth transition into their reality once they completed their contract. That last day in service in uniform and the first day as a U.S. Veteran is bittersweet yet filled with heaviness. All I knew of myself for years was being MSgt Schaefer, an Airman, a Leader, a Servant. I did not know who Sara was. What did she represent, what was Sara like and what did she like to do?

This blog is about my journey from various transitions and transformations throughout my life. Of course not all transitions are pretty or easy or even planned ahead. Healing the heart is easy when you are human, but healing the mind and the ego is the most difficult part of the journey. It becomes a spiritual battle to confront the heart with logic and logic with the heart. In the end, there are no loosers or winners with this transformation. You become a brilliant human in balancing the scales and press on.
